Hide and Seek

It is summer's dusk,
after supper chores are done,
children congregate
in the back-lane for some play,
energy needs releasing.

Short running child steps,
sounds on grinding loose gravel,
dispersing behind
garage corners, trash cans, or bush
to hide from one left behind.

Alone they listen
for clues to begin their search
of soft giggles and shh-shh,
finding before “1-2-3
on _” or “I'm home-free”

Now ending playtime
with parents on the front porch,
quenching playing's thirst
with cool-aide and surprise treat,
laughing with replay before bed.
